History Day

Yep, that's Sydney Harbor there on the left......because on this day in 1788, the first European settlers in Australia landed in Sydney. (I"m guessing it didn't look like that back then!)

And in other news.......

1784, Ben Franklin wrote a letter to his daughter saying how disappointed he was that the Bald Eagle had been chosen as our national bird. He was rooting for the Turkey. (Hey, he couldn't be right all the time!)

1802, Congress passed an act calling for a library to be established within the US capitol

1837, Michigan became our 26th state

1861, Louisiana seceded from the Union

1870, Virginia rejoined the Union (a busy day for states!)

1875, George Green of Kalamazoon, Michican patented the electric dental drill. (I just got a chill. You?) Prior to George's invention, the dental tools of the trade included hammers and pliers. YIKES

1913, Jim Thorpe returned to of the gold medals he won at the Olympics because he had played professional baseball. Sixty years later (and twenty years after his death) the medals were returned.

1934, The Appolo theatre opened in NYC as a "Negro Vaudevilled Theatre"...The Appolo saw the birth of some great acts

1988, Andrew Lloyd Weber's Phantom of the Opera, the longest running musical on Broadway, opened at the Majestic

1996, Hilary Clinton testified in the Whitewater hearings

1998 Bill Clinton denied "having sexual relations with that woman"

2005 Condoleeza Rice sworn in as Secretary of State

2006, confronted by Oprah on her tv show, author James Frey admitted to lying in his "memoir"...(they call that fiction, James.)

That's it for me......what about you?

Number One for TWO WEEKS!!!

Yeah, I know I already posted for History Day today....but this was worth posting about, too!

Thanks to everyone who ran out to buy a copy of AN OFFICER AND A MILLIONAIRE! That's right, the book is Number One on the Walden's Bestseller list for the second week in a row!

I'm so glad you're all enjoying this book. I had so much fun writing that story! Hunter and Margie are just a great couple--romantic, sexy and funny!

So those of you who haven't made it to the bookstore yet, get out there and get your copy, okay? Let's see if we can make 3 weeks on the list!

Oh, and don't forget...make your local author happy and pick up a copy of BEDEVILED while you're at it, okay?

History Day....

History Day again! Wow, days are going fast......

If you're wondering about the picture on the left...On this day in 1915, George Claude of Paris, France, patented the neon tube advertising light. Just imagine Vegas without George's invention!

And in other news...

1825, Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett of NYC patented a canning process to preserve salmon, oysters and lobsters.

1861, Georgia seceded from the Union.

1937, Howard Hughes set a trans-continental air record, flying from Los Angeles to NYC in 7 hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds. (Okay, the flight takes about 5 hours now. Shouldn't it be faster??)

1953, 68% of all televisions in the nation were tuned to CBS as Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball) gave birth to a baby boy. Lucy had a bigger audience than Dwight Eisenhower, who was inaugurated the following day.

1955, a presidential news conference was filmed for TV for the first time, featuring Dwight Eisenhower.

1959, Dick Clark's AMERICAN BANDSTAND was the number one show on television.

1966, Indira Gandhi was appointed India's prime minister

1974, Notre Dame ended UCLA's 88 game winning streak in basketball. (hate basketball...)

1976, the Beatles turned down a 50 million dollar offer to play together again on the same stage.

1981, The US and Iran signed an agreement paving the way to the release of 52 hostages who had been held for more than 14 months.

1983, Klaus Barbi, once a Nazi Gestapo chief was arrested in Bolivia on war crime charges of having tortured and killed thousands of people. He was convicted and died in prison in 1991

2001, president Bill Clinton admitted lying under oath about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. He also handed in his law license for 5 years.

That's it for me........anybody else??

History Day..........

History Day is back! And to kick us off.... a picture of the original Women's Liberation Movement! Because on this day in 1915, the House of Representatives voted to DENY women the vote. Ah yes. Our government at work. Even back then, managing to ignore one half of the population. Thanks Guys!

And in other news.....

1773, the first public museum in America was established in Charleston, SC

1932, Hattie Carraway became the first woman elected to the US Senate. (Bet she had some bad days)

1943, it's Frankfurter Day! The Office of Price Administration announced that the standard frankfurter/hot dog would be replaced with VICTORY SAUSAGE, made of meat and soybean meal. (ooh, yummy! Clearly, the folks at home during WWII had to make plenty of sacrifices too!)

1949, the Chicago based children's program, Kukla, Fran and Ollie made its national debut on NBC

1963, Songwirter Bob Dylan sang BLOWIN' IN THE WIND on the BBC radio presentation of The Madhouse of Castle Street,

1965, the TV show HULLABALOO made its debut on NBC. It was a direct competition maneuver to ABC's SHINDIG. Guests on the first show included The New Christy Minstrels, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Zombies (loved them!) and of all people, Woody Allen.

1966, Batman debuted on ABC

1971, ALL IN THE FAMILY premiered on CBS

1987, Europe was snowed in as a SIBERIAN EXPRESS spread across the continent

That's it for me. What've you got? Remember, post this week and win some books!

Books, books, books..........

So today I went to my local RWA meeting. Always a good time. And for me, that's saying something. I'm not much of a 'joiner'. I don't do committees or groups or well, pretty much anything that's organized and filled with rules.

But RWA is a different ballgame. In that room, once a month, I spend a few hours with other writers. Women (and a few hardy men) who understand what it's like to stare at a computer screen and make up stuff for a living. We laugh, we talk, we complain, we go to lunch and then when we have a release out, we sign our books.

Today, I signed BEDEVILED and was supposed to sign AN OFFICER AND A MILLIONAIRE, my January Desire. (Unfortunately, the Desire didn't come in, so I'll be signing that one next month along with my February Nocturne VANISHED.

Anyway, the point of this blog is to say that I love my job. I'm busy and I'm grateful. There are people out there who love to read my books and I'm thankful for all of you. So at the beginning of the New Year, I just wanted to say so...if not out loud, than at least in print!

This week, I'm going to be paying attention to whoever posts and on Friday, I'm going to draw two names and send those two readers signed copies of all three of my recent releases....BEDEVILED, AN OFFICER AND A MILLIONAIRE and VANISHED.

BEDEVILED pre-empts History Day!

Okay so yes, I should be doing History Day today. Took off for the holidays and ooh, then got the Cold That Ate California, that is still with me.......good times., BEDEVILED takes center stage!

It's out there on the shelves, folks!! That cover is eye catching and the story is really me on this. Sure, I know I wrote it so I'm probably prejudiced, but it really is good!

It got a Starred Review from Booklist--very prestigious review magazine--here's the quote:

"Clap if you believe in Faeries and even if you don't, you can applaud Maureen Child's heartwarming, hilarious adventure, a ticket to the fantastic Otherworld and back."

So, what're you waiting for?? Get thee to a bookstore and shop!!

Oh, and your local neighborhood writer thanks you..............................
