Today in History..........
So, I'm thinking that Mondays are going to be "Today in History" days...Just because this is my blog and I think it'll be fun!
Although, I'm sort of cheating right out of the gate. Because the ever popular pencil was patented not today in 1858, but yesterday. So a small cheat.
The point (no pun intended) is, that a pencil seemed the best way for a writer to start this whole Day in History thing. Because thanks to Hyman L. Lipman, of Philadelphia, who had the foresight to actually patent a pencil equipped with an eraser, writers all over the world had their very first personal delete key. Yes, rubber erasers don't seem like much to us now, but think about what it must have been like before they were handy! So thanks, Hyman--hmm. Wonder why he didn't call his invention the Lipman?
Pick up a pencil and say a quiet thank you to Hyman, everyone.
And, to be completely fair, today in history, specifically 1889, The Eiffel Tower opened in Paris. Pretty, isn't it? Well, most of us think so now. But back in the day, most people thought it was a "horrid nightmare".
Ah well, the tower's still standing while all of those who called it names have been long forgotten. Is there a lesson in there somewhere? Probably. But I'm too tired to look for it!
And the nominees are.............
So yesterday was CALL day! That's right, romance writers the world over huddled beside their telephones, shrieking at family members to keep the line clear. We cursed at telemarketers for getting their hopes up by ringing their phone. And we whined to our friends via email when the phone didn't ring!
That was me, anyway. Yeah yeah, we always say we're fine with it. We're not really counting on making the finals. But secretly, we all want the phone to ring. So imagine my surprise, when, being the last dinosaur on the face of the planet, I'd spent hours online yesterday, hanging out at Romance Bandits, answering questions and whatnot....Then I get an email from LINDA HOWARD!
That's right. THE Linda Howard, asking me to phone her asap. So naturally I did! Who wouldn't call HER back? That's when I found out I was a RITA finalist! Seemed she'd been trying to get hold of me for hours, but my line was busy! I"m very grateful that RWA doesn't just pull your nomination when you're annoying!!
My Christmas vampire novella
CHRISTMAS CRAVINGS, is a finalist in the novella category for the RITA award! Very exciting, of course! And I had such a good time writing that story that I'm really glad it got noticed. And after all....what's Christmas without a vampire?????
Romance Bandits.......
So, tomorrow, Tuesday, I'm being interviewed over at ROMANCE BANDITS They're a really fun bunch, so come on over and ask me some questions or something!
Or, just as important to me, keep me company!!!
Hope everybody had a great Easter!
