History Day........

What a pretty lady there on the left, huh?? Back in the day, when the French still liked us, they gave us the Statue of Liberty to cement our friendship and the lovely lady was unveiled and dedicated in New York harbor on this day in 1886!

And in other news....

1636, Harvard college was founded

1793 Eli Whitney applied for a patent for his Cotton Gin

1904, fingerprinting was first used by the St. Louis police department (a day no criminal celebrates)

1919, Congress ignored President Woodrow Wilson's veto and enacted the Volstead act, which provided for enforcement of Prohibition....(clearly Congress has come a long way. I can't see them voting for this now, can you??)

1927 Pan American Airways (remember Pan-Am?) flew the first International flight from Key West FL to Havana, Cuba

1940, the Greek Resistance and military turned back Mussolini's troops and closed their borders to the Nazis! This day is still celebrated in Greece as Ohi (No!) Day

1958, John XXIII was named Pope

1961, Brian Epstein, a record store owner in London was asked for the song MY BONNIE by the Silver Beatles. He didn't have it in stock, so he went to the Cavern Club to check out the group. In a matter of days, he was their new manager and renamed them THE BEATLES

1962, Kruschev informed the US that he had ordered the dismantling of nuclear missles in Cuba (remember THOSE scary days??)

1965, the Gateway Arch was completed in St. Louis Missouri

Okay everybody, what've you got??

Great Cover.........

So, I'm putting this cover up on my blog because I CAN!

Isn't it gorgeous???

This book comes out from NAL in January 09 and if I do say so myself, it's a lot of fun! I'm posting the opening below and in the next couple of days I'll be asking for names of those who might be interested in reading an advance copy of the book and running out to post reviews on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and oh, anywhere else you might think of!

So if you're interested in becoming a part time reviewer, start thinking about it, okay?

With a little 20/20 hindsight, Maggie Donovan never would have gone to see her ex-almost-fiancée that morning. Unfortunately, just like everybody else in the world, Maggie didn’t know something hideous was going to happen until she was in the middle of the freaking nightmare.
Dressed for work in her faded blue jeans, paint spattered tennis shoes and a tee shirt that read Do it in paint, Maggie’s plan had seemed simple enough. Take a box of Joe Ericson’s left behind junk—including ABBA CD’s for God’s sake—to his office, drop it off and put him out of her life for good.
He wasn’t a bad guy, really. But she had finally had enough. She just hadn’t been able to spend one more night watching his DVD collection of the original Star Trek TV show and discussing over and over again how Kirk was a much better captain of the Enterprise than Picard.
So anyway, her plan was simple, until she walked into Joe’s office and found him being eaten. Not in a sexual way, either.

History Day.........

History Day again.........the picture on the left is to represent Louisiana....(and hey, it's a gorgeous place, right??) Anyway, on this day in 1803, the US Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase. And in other news............

1811, Fulton's steamboat, New Orleans, built in Pittsburgh, sailed down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. It was the first steamboat in western waters and the trip would cost you $30. A small fortune back then...........

1873, a Hippodrome was opened in New York City by showman PT Barnum, to house The Greatest Show on Earth--what turned out to be the greatest circus in the land.

1910, a baseball with a cork center was used for the first time in a World Series game

1944, Gen. Douglas MacArthur stepped ashore at Leyte in the Phillipines, two and a half years after he had promised, "I shall return".

1947, the House UnAmerican Activities Committee opened hearings into alleged Communist leanings in the motion picture industry....(ah, a proud moment, don't you think?? sigh)

1962, Bobby 'Boris' Pickett and the Crypt Kickers reached the top of the charts and stayed there two weeks with The Monster Mash........And darned if it doesn't make a comeback every Halloween!

1964, former President Herbert Hoover died at the age of 90 in NYC

1965, The Beatles receive a gold record for Yesterday. It was the first time a cello had been used in a pop hit

2000, Egyptian born Ali Mohamed, a US citizen who'd served in the Army, pleaded guilty in New York to helping plan the deadly US Embassy bombing in Africa in 1998 that killed 224 people including 12 Americans.

Okay, that's what I found...........How about you guys??
