History Day.......

Ah, History Day....and isn't that a sweet Emmy thingie doing its dance over there? So you guessed it. On this day in 1949, the first Emmys were given for outstanding TV. Wait a minute. They had TV's in 1949?? Who knew?? And as a side note...most Emmys won by a series? The answer is FRASIER, which won 30 Emmys total. Good show, too.

1858, Mendelssohn's Wedding March was played for the first time for the daughter of Queen Victoria's marriage to the Crown Prince of Prussia. Ahhh, that was a great party, I hear.

1870, G.D. Dows patented the ornamental soda fountain. Oh yeah. That's my kind of inventor. Hot fudge sundae, please!

1915, Alexander Graham Bell in New York spoke to his assistant, (Watson again!) who was in San Francisco, connecting the first transcontinental phone call.........Just imagine how many happen now!!

1937, NBC radio presented The Guiding Light! The soap opera made a move to TV in 1952, though it also stayed on radio until 56.

1961, John F. Kennedy presented the first live Presidential news conference from DC. JFK's quick wit and charm made him an instant sensation. (God, wish we had some of that THESE days...)

1964, The Beatles reached #1 with I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND and turned every American teenager into a Beatlemaniac...unless they were Stones fans.

And there was LOTS of news about Super Bowl victories, so I'll set them down in a lump...
1981, Raiders 27, Eagles 10
1987, Giants 39, Broncos 20
1998, Broncos 31, Packers 24

And that's what I've got! How about you guys?? Any tidbits? Comments? Let's hear 'em........

History Day.........

History Day! And who is that glum faced guy on the left?? Captain James Cook of the British Navy. Why is he so glowery faced? Probably because on this day in 1778, he 'discovered' what he called the Sandwich Islands. Big surprise to the people already living there and calling it Hawaii. Anyway, Cook spread the word about these gorgeous islands and visited them twice. Should have gone only the once as it turns out.

His second trip there, the natives weren't so welcoming. A battle erupted between the Hawaiians and his men and Cook was killed. Discovering places is just not the thrill ride you'd expect.

1886, the Hockey Association was formed in Britain. (They have a Hockey Association?? Who knew??) Okay, never mind. That's FIELD hockey.

1896, the Xray machine was exhibited in NYC for the first time. If you wanted to get an upclose and personal peek, it cost you 25 cents admission.

1943, the U.S. commercial bakers stopped selling sliced bread. Only whole loaves were sold until after WWII. (What did slicing bread have to do with anything??)

1957, the first non stop around the world flight ended in Riverside, CA today. In case you were wondering, the plane was refueled in mid flight by aerial tankers.

1973, PINK FLOYD began recording Dark Side of the Moon. Mmmm. Let's hear it for some good rock and roll.

1976, Steelers beat the Cowboys in Superbowl X

1990, Eric Clapton kicked off an unprecedented string of 18 concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in support of his solo album Journeyman. (Let's hear it for GREAT rock and roll.)

And that's what I've got? Anybody else? Or have you all moved to Twitter? Curses!!

History Day......

History Day is back! And to kick us off, we have Amelia Earhart--in 1935, she became the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California--2 years later, she would disappear. I really want to know what happened to her.

1770, the first Rhubarb was sent to the US. Benjamin Franklin was the culprit.

1878, For the first time, milk was delivered in glass bottles by Alexander Campbell in New York.

1913, the first sedan type car was unvelied at the National Auto show in NYC, courtesy of the Hudson Company.

1963 Whiskey a Go Go opened tonight on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood!

1984, Thriller, by Michael Jackson, became the all time best selling album with ten million copies sold. And I think I still know all the dance moves!!

What've you guys got?
