History Day.....









HAPPY BIRTHDAY U.S. MARINE CORPS!

On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress, getting ready for the big revolution to come, authorized the formation of two battalions of U.S. Marines.

And thanks to them, their families and all of the other military branches, we continue to be safe and secure in an everchanging world. So tonight, when we all go to bed in our safe homes, take a moment to pray for the safety of those who risk everything to ensure our freedom........

1871, Henry Stanley uttered that famous line, "Dr. Livingstone I presume", when after an eight month search through Africa, he finally located the missing explorer/missionary

1928, Knute Rockne gave his speech about 'winning one for the gipper'

1928, Hirohito was enthroned as Emperor of Japan

1929, Kate Smith sang Irving Berlin's God Bless America on national radio

1939, the first air-conditioned automobile went on display at the Auto Show in Chicago

1951, Direct dial, coast to coast telephone service began as the Mayor of Englewood, NJ called his counterpart in Alameda, CA

1954, the Iwo Jima Memorial was dedicated in Arlington, VA

1956, Billie Holliday returned to the New York City stage after a three year absence

1969, Twenty years after its original release, Gene Autry received a gold record for Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

1975, The worst Great Lakes shipwreck of the time, the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald happened today. 29 crewmembers died
