History Day.........

So it seems I've been doing History Day for a year already!! My very first one starred the little implement in the picture!!

On this day in 1858, Hyman Lipman gave writers everywhere a break! He patented the pencil! With an eraser on top, inventing the very first delete key! Let's hear it for Hyman!

In other news....

In 1842, Dr. Crawford Long performed the first surgery while a patient was anesthetized! Seems he saw a bunch of partiers under the infulence of ether and nitrous oxide and realized they were feeling no pain. So, he tried it out on his patient and woo hoo! (Just imagine for a minute, surgery WITHOUT anasthesia!! Yikes!)

1867, Alaska was purchased from Russia for two CENTS an acre.

1870, the fifteenth ammendment to the Constitution was invoked, giving black men the right to vote. (Not women, mind you!!)

1870, Texas was readmitted to the Union

1945, during WWII, the Soviet Union invaded Austria

1963, the Chiffons began a four week stay at the top of the pop music charts with HE'S SO FINE
(Now try to get that tune out of your head! Come on, I know you've heard it!)

1981, President Reagan was shot in the chest by would be assassin John Hinkley Jr.

Okay, that's it for me! What've you guys got?

Of course I remember that song by the Chiffons! "He's so fine, la la la la la la".
And I think the only method to dull the pain back then, was to just pour some whiskey down the poor person. Thank goodness things improved.
1636- The will of English-born John Harvard awards his library and a grant to found a new college built in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is named Harvard, after its founder, and becomes one of America's most prestigious universities.
1932- Swimming star, Johnny Weissmuller, stars in his first Tarzan movie.(loved that loin cloth)
1955- The world's first mass produced transistor radio is launched by Sony.

Oooh. Johnny's loincloth. Was it just me who wondered how that thing never flapped or lifted despite all the running around and swimming??

Hey, I didn't know Sony did the first transistor radio.......damn, that takes me back, too!! We could listen to HE'S SO FINE on it!

I love pencils! It's a weird things, I like a new sharpened pencil when I sit down to write.

    MY YOUNGEST SON STEALS THEM!

I'm also very grateful for Dr Crawford Long! I sure don't want to be awake during surgery.

    Another great history day, Maureen!
