History Day............

History Day is back!!

Today in 1909, Orville Wright set a record for the longest plane flight. (Not that he had a lot of competition!) But his flight, testing the Army's first airplane, lasted 1 hour, 12 minutes and 40 seconds. Unfortunately, he was so tired from the experience, he crash landed. But Orville was ok....(wonder what he'd think of the space shuttle???)

In other news..............

1775, Benjamin Church began his service as the first Surgeon General of the Continental Army

1947, the World Water Ski Organization was founded in Geneva Switzerland. (who knew??)

1953, the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War was signed today in Panmunjon. The war lasted 3 years, 32 days. The peace talks that led to the armistice lasted 2 years, 17 days,. (tough crowd)

1973, Secretariat broke two records while PRACTICING at Sarasota Springs, NY

1974, John Denver's biggest hit Annie's Song, reached the top of the Billboard charts.

1976, John Lennon's request to become a permanent resident of the US was approved. (I can't help wishing it had been denied. Maybe then, he'd still be alive and making music........)

1987, freeway shooting incidents were the talk of L.A. Since June 18th, there had been 9 incidents -- two people were shot to death and four others injured. Road rage was blamed and authorities warned us all to be nice to our fellow drivers and stop flipping them the bird--just in case that bad driver was armed.

1995, the Korean War Memorial was opened in DC on the 42nd anniversary of the armistice. (And on a personal note, if you've never seen this memorial, make it a point to do so. It is without a doubt, the most beautiful, heart wrenching thing I've ever seen...

That's what I've got...how about you?? Been saving up??
