History Day.......

It's History Day again!! On this day in 1942, V Mail, or Victory Mail was used for the first time. V Mail used a special paper for letter writing during WWII. It was designed to reduce cargo space taken up by mail sent to and from US troops. Letters written on this special paper were opened at the Post Office, censored and reduced in size to be photographed. One roll of film contained 1500 letters......(Your post office, official government peeping toms....)

1807, the crew of the British Man o' War, Leopard, fired upon and boarded the US frigate, Chesapeake. The commander, James Barron, was convicted of not being prepared for action during a courtmartial.

1952, the US Olympic fund increased by One Million Dollars, thanks to a nationwide, fourteen and a half hour telethon that starred Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.

1959, THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS, by Johnny Horton, started week number 4 at the top of the nation's Tunedex....The song was number one for six weeks.......and I'm humming it right now. Come on, you know you are, too.... sadly, Johnny Horton died the following year in a car accident.

1964, The US Supreme Court ruled that Henry Miller's controversial book, TROPIC OF CANCER could not be banned. Woo Hoo!! Let's hear it for freedom of speech!!

Well, that's it for me..........I KNOW you guys have got more!! Let's hear it!

Saturday Heroes...........

So I've been having computer crises...one right after another for the last few weeks--which is why there haven't been many postings from me!

I'd been trying to get my computer --my trusty book writing machine--to hang on until Microsoft comes out with the new operating system, Windows 7. See, I'd heard nightmare stories about Vista. I soooo didn't want Vista.

Naturally, my computer decided to implode early. So, I spent some quality time with the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I've got a brand new laptop (which I'm really trying to get used to), and yes, I've got Vista.

But the Geek Squad walked me through most of it. And they promised to take Vista off and put Windows 7 on for me as soon as it's possible. So for me, that makes them Saturday Heroes................

At least until the computer starts making me nuts again...........
