History Day.........

So it seems I've been doing History Day for a year already!! My very first one starred the little implement in the picture!!

On this day in 1858, Hyman Lipman gave writers everywhere a break! He patented the pencil! With an eraser on top, inventing the very first delete key! Let's hear it for Hyman!

In other news....

In 1842, Dr. Crawford Long performed the first surgery while a patient was anesthetized! Seems he saw a bunch of partiers under the infulence of ether and nitrous oxide and realized they were feeling no pain. So, he tried it out on his patient and woo hoo! (Just imagine for a minute, surgery WITHOUT anasthesia!! Yikes!)

1867, Alaska was purchased from Russia for two CENTS an acre.

1870, the fifteenth ammendment to the Constitution was invoked, giving black men the right to vote. (Not women, mind you!!)

1870, Texas was readmitted to the Union

1945, during WWII, the Soviet Union invaded Austria

1963, the Chiffons began a four week stay at the top of the pop music charts with HE'S SO FINE
(Now try to get that tune out of your head! Come on, I know you've heard it!)

1981, President Reagan was shot in the chest by would be assassin John Hinkley Jr.

Okay, that's it for me! What've you guys got?

Saturday Hero

Ah, a new tradition is born on Maureen's blog......

Saturday Heroes.

Staring out at you is Josh Holloway--our very first Saturday hero.

I admit it, I got lost watching Lost. Finally gave up on it altogether. Frankly I don't care anymore what happens to them on that stinkin' island or even what it's all about!

But Sawyer.....now who wouldn't care what happens to HIM?

There's something about the bad boy. All women have a soft spot for them or they just wouldn't be so popular in movies and books. Let's face it, there's something about the guy you could NEVER bring home to mom that just gets the old heart slamming up against your ribs.

He's dangerous. He's gorgeous. And when he actually does the 'right' thing, it means even more than when an honorable man does it--simply because it's so unexpected.

So which bad boy is YOUR favorite?

Favorite Fictional Heroes

So I've been doing some thinking lately, (while I'm daydreaming about my latest hero), and I wondered.

Who's your favorite fictional hero? Do you have a 'type' you usually go for?

Me? I always went for cowboys. I think it was the strength I saw in them. The sense of honor. They did the right thing, no matter the cost. And when they loved, it was completely.

Those cowboys in the movies fed my imagination for years. Then I found Louis L'Amour's books and I lost myself in his descriptions of men and women who fought the elements and sometimes themselves and still managed to tame a continent.

And is there a woman alive who can resist a cowboy like Sam Elliott? The strength of character? That gravelly voice?

So tell me. What's your favorite type of hero? Give me some names. Are you a Highlander girl? An English Lord? A fireman? Police Officer? Let's hear it. Come on, let's talk heroes.

History Day..........

e
History Day!! On this day in 1965, America's first two person spacecraft was launched from Cape Kennedy! Virgil, 'Gus' Grissom and John Young blasted off together on Gemini 3! (In my opinion, you had to be REALLY brave or REALLY crazy to ride a rocket! Maybe a little of both!!)

And in other historical news.....

1743, Handel's 'Messiah" had its premiere in London

1775, Patrick Henry called for America's independence from Britain, giving his memorable speech--"Give me liberty or give me death!"

1806, explorers Lewis and Clark, having reached the Pacific Ocean, turned around and started back!

1919, Mussolini started his Fascist movement in Milan, Italy. Didn't turn out so well for Benito!

1925, the Scopes 'Monkey Trial' --okay, the trial wasn't today, but the law was enacted that forbade any public school teacher from teaching anything but Creationism. A couple months later, Scopes was indicted and later convicted in the "Monkey Trial". He was fined one hundred dollars.

1942, during WWII, the US government began moving Japanese Americans from their homes to detention camps. (Amazing to think about now, isn't it??)

And that's it for me! What've you got?

Coming in June

So, everyone's been asking me!

For the last couple of months, I've had excerpts in the back of all the Desire books on the shelves! Yep, very exciting.

Well, they're not really excerpts, they're little scenes that added together, create a pre-quel of sorts for this book, coming in June!

The problem is, that someone forgot to put the title of the book or when it would be out, on the scenes!

So here it is, everyone!

SEDUCED INTO A PAPER MARRIAGE is the last book in the Hudson Continuity series. It's all about Devlin and his wife Valerie and I think it's a lot of fun! So, watch for it in June, or go HERE and preorder it!

History Day Cancelled Due to Cranky Computer!

Yes, I admit it.

I've been done in by a blasted computer!

I had History Day facts all typed up--a great picture of West Point Academy graduates, and then hit post.

Nada.

Twice.

So, in the hope of not bashing my head through my computer screen, this is my last attempt at posting today.

I do remember that West Point was started on this day in some year way back when.

I also remember that Hitler dumped the Versailles Treaty today at some point in time.

And the My Lai massacre happened today during the VietNam war...

Alas, that's all I've got from my memory banks..........so, if anybody out there wants to give it a shot, tell me what happened today in history!
